The 5 Most Dangerous Cars on the Road in America

As much as we’d all like to believe that any vehicle we choose to drive will be able to keep us safe, there are plenty of models that don’t prioritize protection for the driver or passengers. Manufacturers instead choose to focus on other elements of the vehicle, usually in an effort to reduce production costs. These aren’t the cars you want to be in if safety is one of your top priorities. Here are some of the most dangerous cars on the road in America based on the number of deaths they were a part of.

Kia Forte

Hundreds of thousands of Kia Fortes are on the road today, specifically the 2015 to 2018 models. While the Kia Forte offers plenty of comfortable amenities, they appear to be a bandage to cover up its rather dismal safety statistics. Avoid the Kia Forte if you can; its death count means that it’s very low on the safety scale, even beyond the compact class of car that it normally occupies.

Hyundai Elantra

The Hyundai Elantra and the Kia Forte share an important statistic: between 2015 and 2018, they had the same number of deaths per million. While not all economical vehicles trade safety for other features, that is very much the case with the Hyundai Elantra. It may be affordable, but one needs to consider what that means in the long run as well.

Chevrolet Sonic

The biggest reason to avoid the Chevrolet Sonic is an issue in its design that makes it prone to rollover, both in driving normally and in accident cases. Rollover accidents can be particularly dangerous and damaging, often resulting in serious spinal injuries even if the car’s passengers aren’t killed.

Hyundai Accent

Be wary of the reviews for slightly older models of the Hyundai Accent. While some sources might claim that its safety ratings are more than adequate, its death count per million says otherwise. Poor seatbelts, poor quality materials for the overall structure, and a lackluster safety cage leave the Hyundai accent in a very bad place safety-wise.

Ford Fiesta

Arguably the most dangerous car on the road in America right now is the Ford Fiesta. In 2020, Ford officially discontinued the production of new Fiestas, heavily influenced by its high death count in the years prior. While there may not be any more on the production line, avoid this car at all costs if you’re in the middle of looking for a used vehicle.
